VELLASPRIDE FINDS THE LINE

Ultra consistent stayer Vellaspride snapped a streak of three consecutive runner-up finishes with a dogged victory on Geelong Cup Day.

The cumulative margin of those past three defeats were less than half-a-length, and Wednesday proved to be his day as he was able to hold off Super Girl in the shadows of the post in the 2400m BM70 event.

Taken straight to the front by jockey Brett Prebble, the five-year-old gelding set a leisurely tempo in the race before ramping up the speed with a 1000m to run.

"He certainly made me work on him, but he deserved the win as he always turns and gives his best and it was nice to repay his owners with a win today," Prebble said.

The win was the son of Clangalang's third career win from 19 starts which includes eight second placings and a third.

The winner was trainer Danny O'Brien's 24th of the season at the outstanding strike rate of 18.5%.
