YOUNG WERTHER BURSTS INTO CUP CALCULATIONS

Trainer Danny O’Brien wanted to find out where Young Werther stood in the Spring pecking order and he got the answer after a scintillating finish to the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes on Saturday.

The dual Group 1 Derby placegetter challenged Spring spruik horse Incentivise getting within half-a-length in driving finish in the 2000m feature, showing O’Brien that his four-year-old  can measure up to both Cups this year.

“We’ve set him for the Cups and today was a day for him to stand up and show where he was at,” O’Brien said.

“He’s done that today. Turnbull (Stakes) Day is moving day in a sense.

“If you are going to be running well in the Cups, or the Derby or the Oaks, you’d want to be running well here.

“I think when he gets back here in the Melbourne Cup, that will be the right one for him.”
