WERTHER CHANGING NARRATIVE

Young Werther's excellent  form over the past 12 months is changing the narrative of him being a "non-winner".

The six-year-old was dominant at Flemington on Saturday in the Australian Cup Prelude over 1800m as he careered away with his fourth career victory.

His second career win in July at Flemington did break a 1042 day drought, however this win takes the gelding's career to four wins and 11 placings from 29 career starts and closing in on $2 million in prizemoney.

"I have ridden him quite a few times and today was our first win together which is great," Lane said of the gelding that he has ridden eight times.

"They say he doesn't win out of turn but to be fair most of those races I have ridden him in have been good races. I did ride him in a Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup."

Lane praised trainer Danny O'Brien's placement and conditioning of the son of Tavistock.

"He was really well weighted in this race day and he is in good form having had the first-up run so he was nice and fit and we just took luck out of the equation and went forward. He thought is was a track gallop as he cruised along out in front and extended easily to put the race away," Lane said.

O'Brien said he was looking forward to  Young Werther contesting another Flemington 2000m Group 1.

"He placed twice in a Turnbull Stakes and in the Spring he was terribly unlucky in the Mackinnon Stakes so fingers crossed he doesn't meet any bad luck in the Australian Cup as we expect he will be right in the race," O'Brien said.
