ROAD TRIP NETS CALVI WIN

When trainer Danny O'Brien accepted with his stayer Calvi at Bairnsdale, punters took notice making the four-year-old favourite assuming the trainer would only make the 600km round trip to win.

The Flemington trainer had only ever had one other runner at the eastern Victorian track and the northern hemisphere-bred was up to the task as he overcame a chequered run to dig deep and land the money.

"It was a good win as we got into some traffic and he had to really launch to run the leaders down, and then inside the final 50m he had to lift again when the challenger came at him," jockey Liam Riordan said post race.

The son of Sea The Stars recorded his second career win in the victory and Riordan was confident the gelding could hold his form this preparation.
