POLITELY DUN PUTS THEM TO THE SWORD

A decision to scratch from Bendigo on Wednesday due to the heavy track proved an inspired decision by trainer Danny O'Brien as Politely Dun surged to victory at Caulfield on Saturday

O'Brien was impressed by the performance of the five-year-old as he sailed down the outside to win the 1800m BM78 event. 

“From last is a bit tough here, but halfway down the straight I can see he's going to be very hard to hold out. He's always been a horse with above average talent, it's taken him a while to put it together, but hopefully this preparation he looks ready to deliver,” O'Brien said.

“He's been a bit of a tease. He's always shown glimpses, but he seems to have furnished a much nicer, older horse. He's a very big horse, so sometimes they just take a bit longer to put it together.  He was terrific first-up at Flemington, he probably wins first-up without having his run checked, so very pleased to see him today.”

O'Brien was full of praise for jockey Damien Thornton following the win.

“Damien gave him a great ride today, but it probably would’ve been ride of the year if he won on him the other day, so very pleased for Damien. He rode a double for us on Thursday at Seymour and he's produced another really good one.”

The Melbourne Cup winning trainer said he would continue taking the son of Dundeel through his grades rather than aim him too high.

"Hopefully get a bit of momentum with him, try and put a few together because I don't think we need to be rushing too high at the moment. He’s maybe a horse that doesn't see much further than 2000 so we might keep him around this 1800-2000 for the moment."

Thornton said we might see the best of the gelding this preparation.

“He put the writing on the wall first up and it’s good to see him deliver again because it has been a little while between drinks hopefully, he gets a bit of confidence from this and who knows where he could end up,” Thornton said.
