O'Brien keeps Star Witness to sprint campaign

One-time Australian Guineas favourite Star Witness will now head to the Newmarket Handicap on March 12.

Trainer Danny O'Brien said it was also possible that Star Witness would run in Saturday week's 1100m Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield.

Star Witness ran third to Enjin Number Nine in the 1300m Manfred Stakes at Betfair Park last Wednesday.

"After speaking to (jockey) Steven (Arnold), the feeling is that at the end of the 1300m at Sandown that he'd had enough," O'Brien said.

"We were not disappointed with his run, given the way the track played against horses drawn on the inside, but we felt he was only a 50-50 chance of running a strong mile.

"We'll stick to what we know he does best. He's only been beaten once down the straight and that was by Black Caviar and there'll be a turnaround at the weights in the Newmarket."
