LAYING DOWN THE LAW

Jockey Jamie Mott combined with trainer Danny O'Brien to score a race-to-race double to start Thursday's Werribee meeting when Roman Law showed his talent with victory on debut.

Roman Law's win had followed the victory of Gemstar in Race 1 on the card.

The five-year-old was sent out the odds-on favourite thanks to a classy trial at Werribee on heavy ground last month, and punters rejoiced as the Pierro gelding led from start to finish to claim the 1000m maiden event.

"He has always showed talent, but is a horse that has had his issues given he is only just starting his career as a late five-year-old," assistant trainer Beau Dunn said post race.

"It was just great to see him put it together on raceday his first time out and hopefully we can go through the grades with him."
