O'Brien has sole Derby hope as Barbaricus spells

ONE-TIME Victoria Derby favourite Barbaricus will miss the race.

Trainer Danny O'Brien was not entirely happy with the three-year-old's third to Marching in the AAMI Vase (2040m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

"I've had a good think about it and have decided to turn him out," O'Brien said. "He's been up for a long time and I think he'd run his race before Moonee Valley last Saturday.

"The Derby is a genuine staying test and unless you have a horse on the way up, you're wasting your time having a go at it. Barbaricus had his first run back in June and has been going since."

O'Brien's AAMI Victoria Derby hopes now rest with Villain, who stormed to favouritism after a Flemington 1800m win on October 6, but lost some gloss when third in the 2000m Norman Robinson at Caulfield two weeks later. Villain shares second favouritism for the Derby at $4.50, with Marching on TAB Sportsbet.
