Glamour Puss Retired

Australia's representation in Friday's July Cup at Newmarket has been reduced to two following the retirement of dual Group One winner Glamour Puss.

The decision to pull the pin on the career of the Danny O'Brien-trained mare was made after she turned in a lacklustre track gallop in the UK on Monday.

"It's a shame but at the end of the day Danny O'Brien, while he was very happy with her over the weekend, worked her on Monday and felt she was a bit flat," said Mark Chittick, part-owner of New Zealand's Waikato Stud which races Glamour Puss.

"She is as good as gold and looks fabulous but she has been such a good mare to us we didn't want to take any risks."

The retirement of Glamour Puss will leave King's Stand Stakes winner Takeover Target and the Lee Freedman-trained Falkirk to fly the flag for Australia at Newmarket.

Chittick confirmed Glamour Puss would return to Australia to be served by super sire Redoute's Choice this breeding season.

A rising six-year-old, Glamour Puss' major wins came in the 2005 Goodwood Handicap at Morphettville and Salinger Stakes at Flemington, both over 1200 metres. All up she won nine of her 26 starts and just under $1.25 million prizemoney.

Her two most recent runs were in England where she finished a creditable seventh to Takeover Target in the King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot and tenth to Les Arcs in the Golden Jubilee.
